Who needs a Tooth Extraction?
While Dr. Hekmat and his team will endeavor to save and preserve your complete dentition, it is often necessary to remove one or more teeth in certain cases. Most people will need to have their wisdom teeth removed by the age of 25, and most senior citizens require tooth extraction. The most common reasons for tooth extraction are an abscessed tooth and wisdom tooth impaction. When these occur, it is necessary to remove the tooth in order to preserve oral health.
Before your oral surgeon begins the procedure, you will have sedation options which include:
Local anesthetic: removes pain at the location of the tooth extraction
Sedation anesthesia: removes pain by suppressing consciousness
General anesthesia: removes pain by inducing sleep
During the tooth extraction, your oral surgeon will:
Make an incision in the gums to expose tooth and bone
Remove bone blocking access to the root
Cut the tooth into smaller pieces, if necessary
Remove the tooth completely
Clean and clear away any debris such as fragmented tooth or bone
Stitch the wound closed, if necessary, to promote healing
Place medical gauze on the extraction site to help form a blood clot and reduce bleeding
After your tooth extraction, you will be advised regarding how to care for the healing area, the best oral care, what foods to avoid, and how to best promote healing.
If you received general or sedation anesthetic, you will be taken to a comfortable recovery room where you will rest while the anesthesia wears off. Patients who receive local anesthetic can expect a short recovery time, which will elapse before leaving the dentist’s operating chair.
Follow up appointments are not usually necessary when no complications occur. Emergency appointments can be made if you experience difficulty swallowing or breathing, immoderate bleeding, high fever, severe pain not relieved by prescribed pain medications, swelling after two or three days, a bad taste in your mouth not helped by salt water rinsing, pus or oozing from the extraction site, persistent numbness, blood, or pus in nasal discharge.
