What is Gum Disease and how is it Treated?
Periodontitis, the condition more commonly known as gum disease, begins with the growth of bacteria in the mouth and—if not treated properly—can result in the loss of teeth subsequent of the destruction of the gum tissue surrounding the teeth which holds them in place.
The goal of gum disease treatments is to promote the complete reattachment of the teeth to healthy gums; to reduce any swelling, pocket depth, to reduce the risk of infection, and to stop the progression of the condition. Your treatment options will depend on your overall health, how progressed the gum disease is, and how well you have responded to previous treatments. Options vary from nonsurgical therapy aimed at controlling bacterial growth to surgical restoration of the supportive tissues.
The causes of gum disease include hormonal changes, bad habits such as smoking, poor oral hygiene, illnesses, and certain medications.
Symptoms of gum disease include:
Gums that bleed during and after brushing one’s teeth
Swollen, inflamed, or tender gums
Persistent bad breath
Receding gum lines
Deep pockets between the teeth and gums
Shifting or loose teeth
Changes in how the teeth fit together when biting down, or the fit of a denture bridge.

According to the Center for Disease Control, Gum Disease is a condition which affects roughly 50% of adults over the age of 30 in the United States. It has been shown to have a connection to other serious disorders such as diabetes, heart disease, and rheumatoid arthritis. Persons diagnosed with gum disease or periodontal disease are at higher risk for these and other conditions, it is believed, due to the entrance of plaque from the mouth via compromised gum tissue into the circulatory system. For these reasons, and to preserve your oral health, it is important to seek treatment for gum disease without delay.
